Declan, age 14
TIS writer of 9 years

Say hello to Declan! (even though he’s almost certainly said hello to you first at the studio) Declan is our most veteran writer at The Ink Spot and someone who always makes others feel welcome and included. He’s always challenging himself with new writing styles and formats and elevating the work done in every class with his innovation and unexpected writing themes and motifs.

Declan, what’s been an unexpected benefit of your learning at TIS?

I've learned over time that your image and your writing are one in the same. At school I've won multiple science and math national competitions by presenting myself through essays only possible with skills learned at The Ink Spot.

What are your favorite classes this year at the studio?

My favorite classes have been Video Production and Mock Trial. Both are things that really have let me creatively express and stretch myself. One of my favorite camp themes has been Gnomes Homes and Fairy Gardens as it merges writing elements with artistic projects in a unique way.

You hold the title of Ink Spotter who’s been at our studio the longest! What have these last several years been like?

I started at The Ink Spot before I remember starting school. I am the person I am now from being able to spend so much time with all types of people, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. My writing skills have drastically improved from classes here. Practicing and pushing my skills over and over has now allowed me to create vivid descriptions that are leagues above what I could have achieved otherwise.

When you aren’t here dominating mock trials and creating new immersive tabletop games, what do you like doing?

I enjoy board games and books.

Declan’s fabulous mom Melissa says:
”Not only has The Ink Spot provided my child with tremendous academic benefit, it is a place that makes him feel valued as a writer and a person. Despite the substantial academic work that takes place in every session, the environment is one of joy, self expression, and belonging. As he approaches high school, his Ink Spot experience has prepared him for the writing challenges that await. With the help of The Ink Spot he has qualified to take 9th grade Honors English while in 8th grade, he has won national competitions based on his mastery of the technical essay, he has written business plans, and debate arguments, and magically suspenseful backstories for his Dungeons and Dragons campaigns”
