Aurora, age 13
TIS writer of 5 years

Meet Aurora, our resident video-making phenomenon and Ink Spotter of five very productive years! Don’t be intimidated by Aurora’s impressive skills in editing or her prolific writing portfolio. Though she is indeed a teen of many talents, she will also be the first person to laugh with you or invite you to play a new game (just beware she will likely win!)

Aurora, what’s life like as a TIS student of 5 years?

At first I was pretty shy, but after I made some friends I became more comfortable. Now, I am very talkative and full of joy at The Ink Spot.

One of my favorite camp themes is Entrepreneur’s Week. I enjoy having the opportunity to create my own business and sell my own products. With this camp, I also get a glimpse of the hard work required to run a business. One of my favorite classes is Video Production. This class helps me pursue my love for video-making. I enjoy getting creative with the video assignments this class offers. The project I’m most proud of is a montage I made for video production back in 2021. This video was very fun to storyboard, film, and edit. I enjoyed working inside and outside of the studio to complete this comedic masterpiece.

You’ve experienced a huge variety of class and camp themes in your time here! Do you have a favorite?

How have you grown as a writer in your time here?

At The Ink Spot, I have learned the process of growing as a writer. I have learned to critique myself in order keep improving my writing, or any task. I have also learned to be open to suggestions from others to improve my writing. I have even learned to apply this skill to other aspects of my life. I’ve also been introduced to a variety of different types of writing here. This has helped me feel more confident while completing new writing projects at school.

What do you like to do when you aren’t here writing legendary mystery stories or blowing everyone away with your video editing skills?

I enjoy performing music and playing basketball.

Aurora’s awesome dad Marc says:
”I am a high school English teacher, and I can honestly say that my 13-year old child can write as well as my most skilled students, and this ability is due in large part to her time at the writing studio. She is confident writing in any genre. She is adept at planning, revising and editing, strong enough to seek out and to accept criticism. She approaches writing as a process, not a crisis. And she is learning to apply these practices to tasks beyond writing. And she wins school wide writing awards every year. Also, she loves the socialization that the writing studio has opened up for her. Aurora has met friends that share her interests and challenge her, in the absence of any of the-competition or academic evaluation inherent in a school setting.”
